This Week Fresh Seafood

In January, which falls within the peak fishing season along Sri Lanka’s south and west coasts, a rich variety of high-quality seafood becomes widely available. With calmer seas and favorable weather conditions, fishing vessels are able to operate efficiently and reach deeper waters, resulting in high quality, fresh catches.

Deep sea and coastal finfish are especially abundant, including Yellowfin and Skipjack tuna, marlin and sailfish, and Spanish mackerel. Also well supplied with barracuda, groupers, snappers, trevally, and white mullet, all valued for their taste and freshness.
At the same time, crustaceans and mollusc are in strong supply. Highly prized Sri Lankan lagoon mud crabs and blue swimming crabs are in season, along with giant tiger prawns, Indian white prawns, freshwater prawns (scampi), and various species of spiny lobsters. Coastal waters also provide generous catches of cuttlefish, squid, and octopus, making January one of the most diverse and rewarding months for seafood in Sri Lanka.

The dependable sea conditions during January play an important role in keeping the seafood industry active, ensuring steady livelihoods for fishing communities and reliable availability for seafood lovers.
